For the second release of Overtime we had the great pleasure to sit down and ask Adelaide music producer Oisima a few questions ahead of his debut Australian Tour. Here it is:
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Oisima & I create jazzy / world music inspired electronic based music.
What does Oisima mean and how'd the name come about?
Oisima was a name a good friend Phil & I came up with whilst sitting around a table with some delicious hoppy beers one sunny afternoon. No specific meaning, I just wanted something slightly oriental & provocative
What inspires you to create?
I get inspired by sounds and people that I'm surrounded by on a daily basis. I am always creating, but having positive vibes around me at all times is a huge influence on my music
How do you think the experience from touring and supporting acts helped your craft?
Having positive responses to performing your music to rooms or festivals full of people is something that will always inspire you to strive harder at your craft.
How did you get into creating music?
Since a young child i've always been surrounded by friends who are incredible musicians and have impeccable taste in sounds. I was predominantly a guitarist & vocalist before embarking on electronic based music.
Little people know that you record every sound for music production, why do you include this in your creative process?
The human element of performance & creativity is something that excites me. There's nothing I love more in albums than slight imperfections as it brings an honest element to the music.
What do you want to contribute to the music culture / culture in general?
I want to contribute a completely unique sound to the Australian music culture. I put a lot of emphasis on honesty & always love surprising listeners with my sound palette & production style.
Choosing to pursue a career in an artistic / creative industry sometimes requires sacrifice. What's one piece of advice a person about to seriously pursue their craft should know?
I guess the one thing i've found about chasing a creation only lifestyle is to be prepared for the ups & downs it will naturally bring with it. There'll be rent days when you'll worry about scraping together funds but the highs far out way the lows. I've never had to 'choose' this life it's only something that I instinctively fell into.
